Social media influencers weren’t filming themselves on glamorous courses or hitting trick shots. In fact, it was decades before Moveable Weights and TrackMan. Arnold Palmer and Sam Snead were major champions in golf using Wilson’s Dynapower irons. A Wilson Staff Dynapower 6-iron was used by astronaut Alan Sheppard to hit a shot on Apollo 14.
Dynapower irons, which were invented seventy years ago, were the state of the art. They had a bore-through, hosel that lifted weight from the heel. They were called “game-improvement” clubs back then. However, they were muscleback blades that had razor-thin toplines with minimal offset. They’d be elite-player clubs if they were up to today’s standards.
Wilson eventually stopped making Dynapower irons or woods. But now, the Chicago-based equipment manufacturer is bringing the family together using modern shapes and materials.
