For close to a year now, many have been saying that Scottie Scheffler would be unbeatable if he could just putt to field average.
At the Arnold Palmer Invitational, Scheffler did more than that. The world number one gained 4.36 strokes putting and won the event by a whopping five shots. It was the best Strokes Gained: Putting week for Scheffler since the 2022 Waste Management Phoenix Open.
Considering the timing, the great putting week for Scottie may have been sparked by an equipment change. Prior to teeing it up at Bay Hill, Scheffler made a switch to a new putter.
Scheffler switched to a Spider Tour X with these specifications.
- 80/20 pure roll insert
- 35.5 length
- 3 degrees of loft and 72 degrees lie angle
- Full sight line which in testing freed him up to not use line on the ball
- True path alignment and high MOI used for the first time
Following his victory, Scheffler was asked in his post-tournemant presser if he had found the putter he’d be using for a while. Scheffler’s responded, saying:
“I mean, hopefully. (Laughing.) Yeah, I like not having to line the ball up. I line this putter up well in the middle of the face. It’s very good visually. And yeah, I try not to focus too much on the results, but my process was really good this week and the results so far are pretty tough to argue with, I would say.”
