Viktor Hovland is the No. Matt Fitzpatrick is the No. 10 player on the Monterey Peninsula for the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.
It looks like he will be part of the conversation during crunch time.
Hovland won the 2018 U.S. Open. Amateur at Pebble Beach, Hovland claimed low amateur status at the 2019 U.S. Open. He opened the event with a 2-under 70 at Spyglass Hill and then fired a 4-under-67 at Monterey Peninsula Country Club.
Hovland was forced to call it quits due to weather conditions. He had made the turn at Pebble Beach with a 2-under 34.
He is tied for sixth, four behind the leader.
Peter Malnati is the man he’s after, a player who won his only Tour win in 2016 at Sanderson Farms. Malnati missed five cuts this season in seven events, including four consecutively, before a solid week at Farmers Insurance Open (T-20).
Like Hovland at 35, the 35-year old played Pebble on Saturday, and enjoyed a round (or at least a portion of one). Malnati started on No. 10, Malnati birdied Nos. 11-13, Malnati turned with a 3-under 33. He birdied Nos. He birdied Nos. 1-3 from 18 feet away. 4.
Between Malnati (T-6) and Hovland, Joseph Bramlett is at 10 under and Keith Mitchell at 9 under. Hank Lebioda at 9 under and Kurt Kitayama @9 under are also at 9 under.
