Scott Simpson has had success in nearly every stage of his six-decade-long golf career.
The 67 year-old was awarded the Fred Haskins Award for the best male collegiate golfer in 1977 and 1976. He also won consecutive NCAA men’s golf titles (1976 and 1977), played on a Walker Cup team (1977), and represented the Stars and Stripes at the Ryder Cup (1987). His one and only PGA Tour Champions victory came at Pebble Beach.
Simpson retired from senior events in 2016, and he quit in 2020. However, Simpson told Golfweek that he was not one to watch the grass grow in retirement.
Instead, he moved to Hawaii full-time in 2014. He volunteered with the Hawaii State Junior Golf Association, and he also did some coaching at high school and college levels before being appointed men’s coach at the University of Hawaii in 2021.
Imagine being coached by a U.S. Open winner.
Simpson stated, “It’s so much fun.” “Hopefully they’re learning something and I don’t mess up.”
More from Simpson’s riveting conversation. Simpson discusses, among other things, how he got to Hawaii as a coach for the men’s golf team and why nice guys don’t finish last. mustache.
