Rory McIlroy stated earlier this week that he supported the USGA’s and R&A’s proposal to repeal the golf ball for professionals and top amateurs.
He said, “I believe it’s going help identify who are the best players a bit easier.”
McIlroy is undoubtedly one of the greatest players in the world. McIlroy has been this way for over a decade. McIlroy’s drive on Thursday against Denny McCarthy at Austin Country Club was one of his best.
This is not an exaggeration.
McIlroy and McCarthy met at the 18th green with the Northern Irishman leading 1 to 1. His first shot was a smash with his driver’s ball speed of 188 mph. It finally touched the green at 349 yards. It ended up 3 feet 9 inches from the hole. To believe it, you’ll need to see it.

The only shot that ends up on the green is the tee shot.
McCarthy’s shot missed the green. His second shot was a miss. McIlroy won two more matches after McCarthy conceded defeat.
McIlroy’s drive of 420 yards earlier in the match at the par-5 12th green was by McIlroy.
