AUGUSTA (Ga.) – Tiger Woods made it to the Masters after surviving a terrible car accident in February 2021. He returned 508 days later and was successful in making the cut. What is his next move?
It is yet to be determined, but one legend golf instructor believes that Tiger’s accident was actually a positive for his golf swing.
Carl Lohren celebrated his 85th birthday last week. More than 50 years after former pupils Marty Fleckman, Deane Beman and Babe Hiskey played on the PGA Tour. Ryan Gerard was awarded Special Temporary Membership to the Tour on Sunday.
Lohren, author and co-author of the cult-classic instructional guide “One Move to Better Golf”, knows more about the swing than most golf instructors. His philosophy of the swing was formed while watching Ben Hogan. He has strong opinions about Tiger’s new swing, which was displayed at the Genesis Invitational in February.

Lohren stated that Tiger was able to stop jumping because of the accident. He doesn’t block it nearly as much. Tiger had a tendency to let his right leg and hip dominate his left leg when he hit it hard. This causes an early spin out.
According to Hank Haney (his former instructor of six-years), Tiger was afraid of the driver for several years. He tabbed Tiger’s Big Miss. This is what tour pros refer to as the shot that can bring in a large number, as a block to his right.
“He was too quick with his lower right side. Lohren stated that he would spin his right hip very early when he reached the top of the backswing. This was what caused his knee problem. He turned straight away instead of moving laterally and then turning. His left hip was never above his left foot. His left hip was in front of his left foot, which put a lot strain on his knee. His left hip would have moved laterally at the beginning so his left hip would have gotten over his left leg. Then, when he turned violently it would have been all stacked over his foot and his knee wouldn’t have suffered.
He spun too early from the right hip and his hands went out to the right. His left hip couldn’t move over his left foot. He hit it sideways and was accompanied by the driver.
Augusta National is often viewed as a second-shot course. However, driving the ball has become more important in recent years. It could help Tiger avoid the ‘Big Miss’ and make it easier to find more fairways. This would increase his chances of winning a 16 _ th major, and a sixth career Green Jacket. Lohren doesn’t think the crash was bad overall. Tiger’s ability to swing and stamina will be forever in doubt due to injuries to his ankle and leg.
Lohren stated that “now, his right leg and right Hip are no longer able be so active, he swings at the driver more like an iron,”
