AUGUSTA GA — Dustin Johnson plans to make a living every day at Amen Corner at The 87th Masters.
Bubba Watson, two-time Masters champion, said that he had four irons in his Tuesday practice round. “I hit a great one to the middle” of the green. The key is to hit that shot under pressure.
The 13th hole at Augusta National Golf Club (also known as “Azalea”) has been statistically the easiest. The famed par 5, which has a cumulative score average of 4.775, was the easiest to play. Players used to hit 3-wood off the tee, and then stand with a low-iron in hand over their second shots.
Augusta National moved last summer the tee 35 yards back in an attempt to restore the risk/reward aspect of the hole’s original design.
However, the forecast isn’t cooperating. Extended outlooks for Friday show a 70% chance of rain with wind gusts of up to 25 mph. Temperatures drop to 52 degrees on Saturday with a 90% chance of rain. The forecast for Sunday is for a sunny morning with a 50 percent chance rain.

Max Homa said that although the average scoring will not be much different, he believes there will be more players laying up due to the weather. Maybe we’ll have great weather this year, so you’ll be able to play a lot more with a 3-iron and a 4-iron. Is that something you want to do? Are you not? That’s going be really fun, I think.”
Rory McIlroy made two tee shots Monday, the first one being slightly higher up the left side. For his second shot, he had 5-iron left. He was 18 inches to 2 feet above the ball.
McIlroy said, “It’s an important decision.” He added, “Since 2009, I’ve never had to make a choice.” You go for the green if you hit a great tee shot. Now, it’s time to make a decision.
Tiger Woods has a career average score of 4.38 on No. 13. He’s had 56 birdies, four double-bogeys, and four eagles in 94 rounds. He is a cumulative 58-under on the hole that’s so famous. It features around 1,600 azaleas, from tees to green.
Woods referred to the 2002 changes that saw the 13 th Tee moved back 20-25 yards. He said that what seemed so amazing back then has been “a moot point over the past twenty years.” Woods believes that the same thing will happen in 20 years, even if equipment is not modified.
Woods said that the changes seem dramatic, but if the guys get longer, taller, more athletic, and continue hitting the ball further, the hole will play with a driver or a mid-iron.
The changes in the weather may prevent golfers from fully understanding the effects of the changes. However, Fred Ridley (chairman of Augusta National Golf Club) noted that World No. 1 was playing the course two weeks before. Scottie Scheffler, the defending champion, hit 5-iron into the hole.
Ridley doesn’t care if more players lay up this week or going forward.
He said, “I look forward to Sunday having someone with a 3-or 4-iron in their hands or even a hybrid hitting their shot in the 13th hole instead of an 8-iron.” It’s going to be the right choice, I think.
