CHARLOTTE (N.C.) – Andrew Putnam, and J.B. Holmes withdrew on Thursday from the Wells Fargo Championship citing back injuries.
Putnam, 34 years old, completed 15 holes in the first round at Quail Hole Club before calling it quits. He had a double-bogey on the 18th hole and then four consecutive bogeys beginning at the third, dropping him to 7 over.
Putnam was the 33 rd on the FedEx Cup rankings heading into this week. He has cut 15 times in 20 starts, including T-2s at the Zozo championship and T-4s at the Sony Open Hawaii.
Holmes, 41, withdrawn from the tournament before the start of round. Austin Cook replaced him in the field.
Holmes won the Quail Hollow Championship in 2014. He missed the entire 2021-22 Tour due to surgery and only made one start in the Fortinet Championship 2021. Holmes made his return at the Farmers Insurance Open, in February. He has only missed two cuts out of eight starts. Holmes’s agent Terry Reilly said that the injury was not related to previous back problems and he did not want to waste a major medical extension if he felt less than 100 percent.
Holmes’ tales of woe are long, as he has suffered from many injuries throughout his career, including brain surgery, ankle surgeries after a rollerblading incident, tennis elbow and vertigo.
