In 2023, the United States Disabled Open took place for a 5th time. Chad Pfeifer won for a second time.
Pfeifer was three strokes behind after eight holes on Wednesday at PGA Golf Club. He stayed on course, despite not recording any birdies. He did, however, card 16 pars along with two bogeys to shoot a 73, and win by two strokes over Jeremy Bittner.
Pfeifer suffered a partial loss of his right leg after serving in Iraq with the U.S. Army.
He said, “It’s important to win.” “I’m aware that I am a target because many guys want to beat me. It’s not always easy.”
Bailey Bish of Tucson, Arizona won the women’s category, marking her first victory in a 54 hole disabled event. Her 88 round on Wednesday was the best of the week. Kelsey Koch finished second, eight shots behind.
Bish, who has dystonia in her right leg and uses crutches for mobility on the course, said: “It is an incredible feeling.” Three years ago I could not even play nine-holes, let alone win a tournament of 54 holes. I am very proud of myself because I worked hard for the past three years.
Dennis Walters, a member of the World Golf Hall of Fame, from Jupiter, Florida won by 18 shots in the Seated Division.
The US Disabled Open Championship is organized by the US Disabled golf Association, with the PGA of America as the Presenting Partner.
