The PGA of America, which announced the withdrawal of Englishman Paul Casey from the 105th PGA Championship on Tuesday, cited an injury.
Casey, 45 years old, has received an exemption to the major that begins on Thursday at Oak Hill. Casey, a former three-time PGA Tour champion and 15-time winner of the DP World Tour, joined LIV Golf last July. He competed at a LIV tournament in Tulsa in Oklahoma.
Casey was forced to miss both the Masters and PGA Championships last year due to a back injury. Casey has made 13 appearances at the PGA. His best major finish was T-2 in 2020. He also finished T-4 in 2021.
Kerry Haigh, PGA, defended Casey’s exemption earlier in the day by saying “Paul Casey is a great player.” He has certainly been injured. “He played on the Ryder Cup when it was last played and has played well at PGA Championships.”
Sam Stevens has replaced Casey on the field.
