The Golf Coaches Association of America has announced that Ben James, a Virginian golfer, is the winner of 2023’s Phil Mickelson award.
James’ incredible campaign ended on Tuesday, when he guided the Cavaliers to the NCAA Men’s Golf Championship quarterfinals in match play. James finished 6th at 4 under 276 during the stroke play portion. Virginia was making its first appearance in match play at the NCAA Championship.
He has won five times in the past year, including his first two starts. He also shared the medalist honors of the Las Vegas Regional.
In 13 starts, James tallied 11 top-10 finishes.
James was also selected for the Arnold Palmer Cup team that will be held next week at Laurel Valley Golf Club, Ligonier in Pennsylvania. The event is a Ryder Cup style and takes place from June 8-10.
