Rose Zhang’s era officially began.
The former Stanford star, who won her debut at the 2023 Mizuho Americas Open in Jersey City on Sunday – just two weeks after successfully defended her NCAA Championship — is 20 years old and has been a Stanford standout for over ten years.
Zhang, who won the Augusta National Women’s Amateur in 2016, defeated Jennifer Kupcho, the first ANWA champion, in a play-off to become the only player since Beverly Hanson, in 1951, to win on her LPGA debut and gain membership to the tour with just one start.
Zhang asked, “What’s happening?” as she held up a bouquet red roses near the 18 thgreen. “I can’t believe it.”
Zhang’s historic victory caught the attention of some people in the sports world. Tiger Woods, a 15-time major champion and Max Homa, a fan favorite were among them.
