I knew duct tape was versatile, but this application may be a first.
On Wednesday at the 2023 U.S. Open, GolfWRX.com spotted a black strip of lead tape covering the topline of Sebastian Munoz’s longtime Ping Sigma 2 Valor putter.
The tape blends so well that you may have missed it at first glance – and that’s exactly the point.
Munoz had previously been using the duct-tape-less Valor mallet since 2019, but according to Ping putter rep Dylan Goodwin, Munoz and his coach found that he actually aligns the putter better without seeing the milled alignment lines showing at address.
Take a look at the stock Valor design below, which Munoz used for years – until just a few weeks ago:
Now, take a look at the “new” putter with the recently applied duct tape:
GolfWRX.com caught up with Munoz on Wednesday at the 2023 U.S. Open to get his take on the tape.
“We needed to find a way that I could delete, or erase, the line without adding weight [i.e., lead tape], so duct tape was the next best solution. The duct tape blends in with the color really well, and it worked.”
As Goodwin explained, Ping did try paintfilling the white center line with black paint, but Munoz actually prefers the smoother black duct tape look.
So, duct tape is likely going into play at the 2023 U.S. Open via Munoz’s putter. My guess is “duct tape on a golf club” wasn’t on anyone’s BINGO card for the year’s third major championship, but here we are.
