LOS ANGELES — Rickie Fowler made history Thursday in the first round of the 2023 U.S. Open, shooting the first-ever 62 in 123 years of the event.
Fowler held the spotlight for all of 22 minutes.
Xander Schauffele, playing two groups behind Fowler, shot a 62 of his own, also parring the par-3 ninth hole to close his round.
Schauffele had a bogey-free round with eight birdies for his 62. He had a better chance at a 61 than Fowler, as his birdie on his closing hole was 24 feet, as compared to the 57-foot putt Fowler faced.
Nonetheless, history was made twice at Los Angeles Country Club. The two 62s are the second and third 62s in major championship history, as Fowler and Schauffele join Brendan Grace, who turned the trick in the 2017 Open Championship.
