The players’ opinions of Baltusrol, ahead of the KPMG Women’s PGA where rain is forecast.

Jun, 2023

SPRINGFIELD (N.J.) — This week, the Lower Course at Baltusrol will host its first women’s major event since 1961. This week’s KPMG Women’s PGA field includes no one who was alive when Mickey Wright won the U.S. Women’s Open for her third time that year.

This week, the top female golfers in the world will get a lesson on history as they take on a course where Jack Nicklaus won two U.S. Opens and Phil Mickelson won a PGA Championship. The U.S. Women’s Amateur was the first USGA Championship ever played at Baltusrol in 1901.

This week marks the beginning of a new chapter in a storied club which in 2014 was designated a National Historic Landmark.

Brooke Henderson, former KPMG champion, said that the course was in excellent condition. “I don’t believe I’ve ever seen a course in such good shape.”

There is bad weather on the way, with a 60-80% chance of rain every day until Sunday. The new drainage system and SubAir will be helpful, but the players will face a very different challenge than they have seen during practice.
