The Black Desert Resort Golf Course opened in Ivins in late May. It was the last course that Tom Weiskopf designed before his death in 2022 . Golfweek’s best raters are raving about the new layout in the southwest corner, not far from St. George.
Near Snow Canyon State Park, the resort’s 18 hole layout is available for play daily. Weiskopf, in partnership with architect Phil Smith built a sprawling layout that features fairways ranging from 70 to 100 yard wide. There are two par 4s that can be driven, the 14 and 5.
Black Desert, when completed, will include a hotel, conference center, over a thousand homes, trails, a wellness spa, and much more. The property is managed by hospitality-management company Troon Golf, and Black Desert is already slated to host an LPGA event starting in 2025. The course will also feature a 19 th hole in an amphitheatre-style and a lit 36-hole putting course.
The Golfweek’s best raters were very positive after their first visit to the course.
One reviewer wrote: “An amazing and stunning design. The lava rock contrast with the surrounding greenery and red mountains is absolutely stunning.” “Truly an oasis. There are many different ways to play several holes depending on how confident you feel that day. The course is beautiful and one that you will remember forever.”
Another person wrote, “Black Desert has blown me away.” It has everything I want in a course of this type. The total package is the combination of scenery, course and setting. I have never seen black lava rocks on the mainland. “You can also see the stunning vistas of red canyons from each hole.”
