DETROIT: From fishing to the top of the leaderboard in the Rocket Mortgage Classic.
Peter Kuest, a BYU grad of 25 years with limited status on Korn Ferry Tour shot an 8-under-64 at Detroit Golf Club and is now atop the Leaderboard following the first round. He shares the top spot with Taylor Moore who won his first PGA Tour Title earlier this year.
Kuest won the gold medal at the Qualifier on Monday, securing one of the four final spots in the 156-man group. Kuest, who is ranked 789 th worldwide, makes his fourth Tour appearance of the season. Kuest received a sponsor’s exemption to the AT&T Byron Nelson in May and finished T-14.
He birdied six times on his front nine on Thursday and only made one bogey. He is attempting to become the Tour’s first Monday qualifier since Corey Conners won the Valero Texas Open in 2021.
Kuest grew up in Fresno in California and ranked number one in driving distance. He averaged 318.6 yard per shot and hit 15 fairways and 12 greens. If he hadn’t qualified, Kuest said he would be fishing in Utah.
