Jason Day was No. 1 in Strokes Gained: Jason Day placed at the end of the 2015-2016 PGA Tour season. Jason Day was ranked No. 1 in Strokes Gained : Putting, something no other golfer has done. He used a TaylorMade Spider Tour Red putter and ended a PGA Tour season at 1.13. This was the highest average Strokes Gained: Putting score of any player.
Strokes gained: The best statistic to compare golfers is SG:P. This is used to determine who is better at putting and how many strokes they have. If a player’s SG:P average is 0.4, and another player’s average is 0.1, that 0.3-shot advantage over 72 holes of a tournament translates into a 1.2-shot swing, and on the PGA Tour, averaging one stroke better than translates into a lot of cash.
In 2016, Day had 54 rounds of measured golf. Day was able to gain more than a full shot edge over the average player (who would average 0.), each 18 holes, solely based on his putting. This is 4.52 shots in 72 holes.
Day’s record-setting performance was not frightened by anyone, but the PGA Tour’s wraparound 2021-22 season is over. We can now look back at the SG:P results and see what putters were used by the golfers.
