Tiger Woods fondly remembers his victory at Royal Liverpool

Jul, 2023

Tiger Woods will be missed at this week’s 151st British Open, held at Royal Liverpool. It doesn’t necessarily mean that he is forgotten.

Woods was honored at the annual Association of Golf Writers Dinner on Tuesday night. He won the Claret Jug in 2006 here. Woods received an award in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the golf industry. Woods had ankle surgery in early April and will be sidelined for indefinitely. Woods recorded a speech to accept the award from his Florida residence. Woods emphasized his Hoylake victory, where he cried on his caddie Steve Williams’ shoulder after tapping in the hole to win the match just two months following the death of Earl, his father.

Woods stated in his recorded message that “that week in 2006” was an emotional one. It was my first championship without my father. It was the toughest week of my life, but it was also the most rewarding. “After my last putt, I realized that my father would never see this again.”

Woods won his third Claret Jug in 22 attempts. He also recalled the third-round score of 81 that he had shot at Muirfield, in horrendous conditions in 2002.

He said, “That was probably the worst golf day in history.” “I’ve never felt so cold, wet or miserable on a golf course. When I came in to give my speech, I was offered coffee by a couple of writers from the UK. It was fantastic.”
