Hideki Matsuyama began the 2023 BMW Championship on Thursday with a score of 1-over-71 at Olympia Fields North Course, outside Chicago.
Matsuyama, however, withdrew due to a lower back injury before the second round in the FedEx Cup Playoffs.
This is the latest injury to hit the Japanese star.
Matsuyama, who is currently ranked 47th on the points standings, will not be invited to the Tour Championship next week at East Lake, since only the top 30 receive an invitation.
He has won nine Tour Championships in a row, which is the longest active streak for any player.

Matsuyama has only two top-10 finishes in 24 events. His best performance came at the Players tournament, where he placed fifth by himself.
