Max Homa and Chris Kirk are yelled at by gambling spectators during the BMW Championship

OLYMPIA FIELD, ILL. – Max Homa could do without the fans shouting at him while he tries to make a crucial birdie putt.

On the 17th green during the third round at the BMW Championship, Homa heard a spectator with a buddy who was betting $3 deliberately say, “Pull It.” This set him off.

Homa still holed the birdie and finished with a 1-over par 71, nine strokes higher than his course record 62 from a day before. Homa attributed it to a drunken fan.

He yelled “pull it” loudly and I hit it in the middle. Then I started screaming at him and (caddie Joe) Greiner yelled back at him.

When asked to recall what he had yelled at the fan back, he replied, “That he was a clown with perhaps another word. I don’t remember what Joe said. He was much meaner than I thought. It was just — I don’t know. Long day, I guess. It’s a bummer when it happens. But I’m glad I made it. He was rude to Chris. Whatever.”

Homa has said that he does not mind fans betting on golf, but is worried about fans trying to influence the outcome in a negative way.

Homa said, “That’s the only thing that worries me.” “I don’t know what he was trying to gain. He was probably kicked out, and we were last.

Homa said that the 17-year-old heckler was an exception, not the norm.

It’s always on your mind. Homa explained that it was up to us to remain focused, or whatever. But it is annoying when this happens. “It is like one of the best things about this game. The fans are always so quiet. They are amazing. It’s always unintentional when anyone talks. They don’t even know that we are hitting them. It’s frustrating when it is incredibly deliberate, and the friend said that it was only $3.

Homa will be in the fourth position after the 36-hole round. He is battling to earn a spot in the U.S. Ryder Cup, and for the Tour Championship next week. This event has a staggered starting order. Every shot counts in crunch-time, especially since the BMW purse is $20 million.

Homa stated that it doesn’t really matter why we are playing. “We worked so hard and I slogged my tail off to bring that thing to near par. Had I missed that, I would have been a nuisance, but it was great to make it in the middle, and hopefully, he had pay his friend that $3 on the way out.”
