Atlanta is having a great week of golf.
The city will be the third location to appear in Tiger Woods’ and Rory McIlroy’s new Tiger Woods’ and Rory McIlroy’s TGL. It joins Boston, and Los Angeles.
Arthur Blank, owner of Atlanta United and Atlanta Falcons, has secured the rights to the team that will be competing in the “technified league”, which is set to start January 2024. Blank owns PGA Tour Superstore and also operates it.
“We are delighted to be partners with TMRW Sports, and founding owners of TGL. Blank said that he saw this investment as a way to grow the sport, introduce golf to younger audiences and deliver an innovative product.
The L.A. team is owned by Alexa Ohanian and Serena Williams, while Venus Williams will run TGL Boston. TGL Boston will be run by Fenway Sports Group, while Alexa Ohanian, Serena Williams and Venus Williams own the L.A.
Six teams, each consisting of three PGA Tour pros, will compete over 15 regular season Monday night matches. Semi-finals and finals matchups are then scheduled to begin in January. The matches will take place at a short-game facility that is tech-infused. The fans will be able see each shot live on primetime TV for a two-hour broadcast.
Twelve of the 18 players have been announced. Among the committed players are a few fan favorites with a combined total of 28 major championships, 190 PGA Tour victories. TGL recently announced Full Swing, as an official technology partnership. This shouldn’t be a surprise, given that Full Swing, the PGA Tour’s official golf simulator partner, counts TGL players Woods, Jon Rahm, and Xander Schwieffele as endorsers.
