Seamus Power must have thought that the best of 2022 was yet to come, given the way he closed the calendar year. Power, who won his second PGA Tour championship at the Butterfield Bermuda Championship late in October, then finished among the top five at the World Wide Technology Championship as well as the RSM Classic.
In 2023, it was a completely different story. The 36-year old native of Waterford in Ireland has not cracked the top 10 this year after 20 starts. Now, the news is even worse. He was forced to withdraw this week from the Horizon Irish Open due to a hip injury.
The Irish Open, which takes place this week at the K Club, Kildare in Ireland, features one of the strongest DP World Tour fields. Rory McIlroy is up against Tyrrell Hatton and Adam Scott. Min Woo Lee, Shane Lowry, and Min Woo Lee are also vying for victory. The tournament will take place less than two-hours from where Power was raised.
Power’s early-season success helped him earn almost $4 million in 2022-23 on the PGA Tour and finish 41st, a new personal record, in the FedEx Cup standings. The hip injury was discovered at the Genesis Scottish Open where Power had to withdraw. He missed the British Open the following week.
Then, he tied for last at the first post-season event in Memphis. He failed to qualify for Tour Championship due to his poor performance at the BMW Championship where he placed 48th out 50 players.
Power had one major highlight during the spring. He became the third person in history to achieve back-to-back hole-in-ones in the par 3 Contest at Augusta National Golf Club, during Masters Week.
The two previous players to achieve this feat were Claude Harmon (Nos. Toshi Izawa (Nos. The numbers 5 and 6 are the same.
