Andy Bean, a former PGA Tour veteran, is recovering after undergoing double lung replacement surgery in Orlando last week.
Bean is a 70-year-old 11-time winner of the PGA Tour. He also won three titles in PGA Tour Champions. Bean became a professional in 1975, after an impressive career at the University of Florida. He was a 3-time All-American who helped the Gators to win the NCAA Men’s Golf title in 1973.
According to a post on Facebook by Alan Pope, Bean’s lungs were severely damaged after a bout of COVID-19. Last Thursday, he underwent surgery at Advent Health Hospital Orlando.
Pope noted that Bean had been “taught to do the right thing at all times.”
Bean, who was twice a member of the U.S. Ryder Cup Team, placed in the top 35 of the Tour Money List from 1977 to 1986. This period included five top-seven finishes. Three times, he finished as a runner up in a major.
Pope wrote: “Keep Andy in prayer as he is doing well so far but a long recovery.”
