Patrick Cantlay says that SkySports journalist Jamie Weir’s article about his refusal to wear the Ryder Cup team cap is “completely false”.

Cantlay explained that the hats did not fit. He said the hat-gate report was “totally untrue.”

Weir tweeted Saturday that sources had told him that Cantlay’s appearance without a hat was because he believed that Ryder Cup participants should be paid. He said Cantlay’s opinions have also caused a rift in the team.

Cantlay said to the media that it was “crazy” that a journalist could tweet a completely unfounded and fabricated lie after his 2-and-1 victory over Justin Rose. “The crowd went wild, and I had fun with them the whole day. Smile.”

Cantlay claimed he turned the taunts of the crowd into fuel.

He said, “I tried my best to embrace this.”

Cantlay’s string of spectacular putts, which closed out the four-ball match on Saturday, almost gave Americans a reason to smile. The raucous crowd chanted “Hats Off to Your Bank Account” and “Show Me the Money” as their favorite chants.

Rory McIlroy was upset that Cantlay’s Caddie Joe LaCava took off his own cap and got in the way of the green. McIlroy was restrained by police in the parking lot on Saturday night after he had to remove his hat. He said that he hasn’t spoken to LaCava since the incident.

Cantlay (nicknamed “Patty Ice”) earned two points for Team USA and improved his singles records at the Ryder Cup. He also won the Presidents Cup. His record is now 4-0-0. He was 2-2-0 in the overall 2023 Ryder Cup. The Europeans won that Ryder Cup by 16 1/2 to 111/2.

Cantlay revealed his plans for the U.S. media session after the matches.
