TUCSON (Ariz.) — “Tin Cup,” probably the second best golf movie made, is available on Google. You’ll find a number of interesting facts , as well as the locations where it was filmed.
In this search, the “tiny Arizona city of Tubac” and Kingwood, Texas are both listed. Another filming location, however, was La Paloma Country Club. This Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course opened in 1984.
The first year of a three-year contract for the Cologuard Classic, by Exact Sciences, will begin in February when the PGA Tour Champions return to Tucson. Tin Cup fans will recognize some of the course.
David Stout, regional director of Troon’s agronomy, said that Kevin Costner had been in the area. He then told a humorous story. The mechanic was actually mowing the area, but there was a problem. They scalped the lawn a few days prior to the filming.
No harm, no foul as the filming began on time.
La Paloma (which means “the dove”, in Spanish) opened with nine holes of the Ridge Course and nine of the Canyon. In 1985, the Hill nine-hole course was added.
Stout says that the Cologuard Classic will make the most of the best of all three nines. The routing of the tournament includes “all the Ridge Course Canyon Nos. Stout says that the Cologuard Classic will take advantage of “all nines” on the Ridge Course, Canyon Nos.
Since 2015, the PGA Tour Champions have played on Omni Tucson National’s Catalina Course. Cologuard was named title sponsor for 2018. Tucson National’s run is now over. A new era begins at La Paloma.
The two courses are located about 10 miles apart, and both have an elevation of about 2300 feet. However, the venues themselves are quite different.
Stout stated that there is a lot going on at these golf courses. It has one of highest slope ratings. Tucson National has a fantastic golf course, but it is relatively flat. This is especially true on the Catalina Course. There’s constant movement here, so the tee shot will be difficult but the second shots will also be. “These Nicklaus greens have a smaller size, are tighter and well protected from all sides.”
