Colson Brown was grateful he wasn’t being nosy one time in the training area.

Bruce Heppler, the Yellow Jackets men’s golf coach and trainer Mark Smith were both in the room when a walk-on true freshmen quarterback was being treated for a shoulder injury. Brown joined in on the conversation when Heppler and Smith were talking about golf.

Brown is now playing golf for the Georgia Tech team in California this week. Golfweek’s Best 2023 lists the top Classic Courses across the United States. Brown played in the Cypress Point Classic and, though he did not win, he was able to experience an opportunity of a lifetime.

Brown, who was a South Carolina state champion in high school, said, “I don’t remember when I learned I would be playing at Cypress Point.” “I don’t think it really sunk in until the day before our departure where I was going play.”

Brown’s interest to play was expressed after Brown introduced himself and Heppler told him that Heppler needed another player for the tournament this week. Georgia Tech had committed to two tournaments, needed 11 players in total but only had 10 available because of one redshirting.

Brown gave the coach his number and showed him videos of his swing. Heppler called a couple of weeks later to say that he had cleared all the details with the football coaches so Brown could join the golf team earlier this week in California.

Brown explained that he began to go to their facility every Tuesday and Thursday. “I knew that my swing was good, but I didn’t want embarrass me by going out and practicing.”

He was taken in by the Georgia Tech golf team. Christo Lamprecht (No. He also played with the national 2023 runner-up team and Christo Lamprecht, No. While attending football practice, classes and other activities.

Brown stated, “The guys made me feel very comfortable.”

Heppler invited Brown to his office a couple of days before the tournament and gave him all the equipment he needed: a travel bag, golf bag, shirts, hats and more.

Brown boarded a plane to travel to the Monterey Peninsula. Six players per team played match play in each of three sessions, including foursomes (four-ball), singles and foursomes.

The first day consisted of 36 holes and began with foursomes. Brady Rackley and Brown were paired together, and although they lost 4-3 to Texas’ Tommy Morrison & Jacob Sosa it was an unforgettable morning.

Brown stated, “Tommy talked to me a lot throughout the day.” Everyone knew what happened, and they were all very nice to me.

Auburn won 2 to 1 in the four-ball match. He was shocked to see thousands of notifications on his phone when he looked at it after a long day.

Brown said, “People were jealous of me. They called me the luckiest American man.” “I suppose it hasn’t yet set in.”

Brown played Illinois’ Piercen hunt in singles on Tuesday. Hunt, who he said was a great opponent and who provided excellent commentary throughout the round, he lost to Brown 9-7.

Brown returned to his normal routine on Wednesday and was greeted by his football teammates with nothing but questions.

Brown was pleased to observe the differences in the way the golf and football teams interacted. He was also impressed with the support the golf and football teams gave him when he stepped in.

Brown will have a great story to share for the rest his life. Heppler even let him keep some of the Georgia Tech golf gear.

Brown: “I can’t say I was Tiger Woods, but I hit the ball as well as I possibly could considering the circumstances.”
