Scottie Scheffler was the No. 1 ranked player in the world during the second half. Scottie Scheffler, the world’s No. The putter may have looked similar to Rory McIlroy’s Spider Tour X, but Scheffler’s club was different. Now, TaylorMade is making the Spider Tour X Proto available in a limited edition model.
The Spider Tour X Proto is a mid-size mallet club that has the same shape as the standard Tour X. It will be available in a standard 34-inch length with 3 degrees loft and a lie angle of 70 degrees. It is designed with a L-Neck Hosel that creates a balance which results in a toe hang of just under 30 degrees. This should be a good fit for golfers who use a slightly arced putting style. The True Path Alignment System is also on top of the putter, just like other Spider Tour putters.

The Spider Tour X Proto is distinguished from the Spider Tour X and Spider Tour by its center of gravity and face.
TaylorMade’s new Spider Tour putters feature TaylorMade’s white TPU Pure Roll Insert. This insert features grooves that are angled downward at 45 degrees to encourage the ball roll rather than skid. The Spider Tour X Proto features a milled face attached to the body with four screws. If you look closely, the face has milled marks.
The Spider Tour X Proto’s milled face should give it a firmer feeling than the Spider Tour standard, and sound more like a single-piece mallet instead of a multiple-sided mallet. The Spider Tour X Proto, with its interconnected sound and feel in putting should perform better than any previous Spider.
Then there’s the weighting. Weights on the Spider Tour and Spider Tour X chassis pull the CG back, toward the perimeter of head. This helps increase the MOI and increases forgiveness. The CG position in the Spider Tour X Proto is 13 millimeters forward, encouraging the face to rotate on the downswing. This produces a blade like swing. The club is still more stable than a blade putter because of its larger size.
The Spider Tour X Proto is only available in a version with a right-hand grip for $500 at taylormadegolf.com. Here are some close-up photos of the TaylorMade Spider Tour Proto.
