Collin Morikawa joins the list of 54-hole leads that were blown in PGA Tour history

Jan, 2023

He played 54 holes in the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions and did not make a bogey. After shooting 64-66-665 in the first three days, he went to bed with a six shot lead.

His lead was seven at the end of the final round, but things started to slip away fast after Collin Morikawa made a bogey on the 14th hole. The 15th hole was his next bogey, and the 16th. Morikawa finished the round with 67 holes without a bogey, and then he had three consecutive bogeys.

Meanwhile, Jon Rahm started heating up. He was nine shots behind Morikawa’s first-hole bogey, but he birdied five of his eight next holes to reach 32. Nos. 12-13 were followed by three more birdies. Rahm took the lead with birdies on Nos. 12, 13, and 14, and an eagle at the 15th hole.

Rahm birdied the 18th hole for an 63, bringing him to 27 under par and claiming a two-shot victory over Morikawa.

It was a remarkable turn of events at Morikawa’s first tournament in 2023. He joins a small list of nine other golfers who also blew a six shot, 54-hole lead on the PGA Tour.
