Winged Foot is working around the clock.
Monday’s announcement by the USGA indicated that Mamaroneck, New York’s landmark golf club, was selected to host the 128 th U.S. Open 2028. This gives the membership approximately five years to see the grass grow on the West Course.
John Bodenhamer, chief championships officer at USGA, stated that “Winged Foot has been the backdrop for some the most dramatic moments of the history of golf,” in a statement. We strive to give players the best stages to compete for national championships, and Winged Foot is one of those stages.
A.W. Tillinghast has hosted six U.S. Opens. Opens with Bob Jones (1929), Billy Casper (59), Hale Irwin (74), Fuzzy Zeller (1984), Geoff Ogilvy (2006), and Bryson deChambeau (2010) as the past champions.
In 2018 , Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner redesigned the West Course to prepare for the U.S. Open. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the USGA moved the 2020 championship from September to September.
Rob Williams, club president, said that today was an “incredible moment” for everyone at Winged Foot. “Our club has a long tradition of hosting the nation’s most prestigious men’s and ladies’ championships. We look forward to writing another chapter of our great sport in 2028.”

Davis Love III won the 1997 PGA Championship at this club.
DeChambeau, a muscular-built player, bombed and gouged his path to the 2020 championship. He was the only competitor to finish below par with a 325 yard average from the tee, and hitting just 23 fairways. This unconventional approach sparked consternation and conversation. DeChambeau finished with a final-round score of 67 and a total of 6-under 274.

In 2020, spectators were prohibited due to COVID-19 restrictions. There were 400+ volunteers and neighbors who built makeshift grandstands in their yards. This created a lot of noise. Everybody on the site had to be tested. For the approximately 2,000 essential workers, there were daily security and health screenings.
In June, the U.S. Open will be held at Los Angeles Country Club. Pinehurst No. 2 will host the championship. 2, in 2024; Oakmont Country Club, in 2025; Shinnecock Hills Golf Club, in 2026; and Pebble Beach Golf Links, in 2027.
