After Patrick Cantlay’s putt, Team USA players and caddies wave hats to fans

Sep, 2023

Rome is getting a bit chippy — and that’s great.

Reports surfaced that Patrick Cantlay was not wear a hat during the 2023 Ryder Cup due to an issue regarding players being paid. Cantlay responded by simply saying the team hat just “doesn’t fit”. He also stated he did not wear one in Whistling Straights 2021 for the same reason.

The rumors were also heard by fans at Marco Simone Golf and Country Club, who taunted Cantlay throughout Saturday, waving their caps at him when he was near a tee or green.

Cantlay and Wyndham were paired together for the final fourballs match. They faced Rory McIlroy, Matt Fitzpatrick, in the final match.

Cantlay, who had just made a birdie on the par-3 17, raced to the hole with his greenside chip at the par-5 closer.

His nickname “Patty Ice”, however, is not a mere coincidence.

Cantlay’s putt was a success and the American won his third match of the session. Cantlay’s putt was a success, so members of Team USA, as well as some caddies, took off their hats and began waving them towards Cantlay. Some even waved at the crowd.

Joe LaCava was Cantlay’s caddie. He also joined in the fun. LaCava and Shane Lowry exchanged words while watching the match off the green. It didn’t appear to be friendly. The tweet said Lowry but the tweet actually says Rory.

The Europeans are leading 10 1/2-5 1/2 going into Sunday. This leaves the Americans with the smallest window to make an unlikely comeback.

McIlroy’s caddie Jim “Bones Mackay” and Justin Thomas had a verbal exchange while waiting for shuttles after the play ended for the day.
