Alison Lee had a record breaking start to the Aramco Team Series Riyadh, Saudi Arabia in the Ladies European Tour.
The 28-year old American finished second at last week’s LPGA BMW Ladies Championship held in Korea. She’s on track to win a trophy this week after posting 61s in a row at Riyadh Golf Club.
Lee’s 36-hole score was 22-under par, which was better than the 16-under tally of Gwladys Pedersen (2021 Tipsport Czech Ladies Open), Kylie Henry (2014) Ladies German Open), Anne van Dam (2018) Estralla Damm Ladies Open), and Emily Kristine Pedersen (2017). She shot 61s, which is the lowest round ever in LET history. In the first round, she also set a record by making eight consecutive birdies.
Lee said, “If you had told me that I would shoot 22 under in two days, I wouldn’t believe you.” “I’m very happy with my current position. I’ve made some really good putts. Statistically [this season], driver, greens-in-regulation, everything’s been really good. But I haven’t had the confidence to use the putter, and that has been my biggest problem.
“[But] I feel great this week, the pace has been fantastic. I was able to putt aggressively and especially here, which is what you need to do if you’re looking to make birdies. I wish I knew why. “I’ve worked really hard with my putting coaches back home.”
Lee’s birdie putt on the final hole fell just short. A tap-in of 61, and a six shot lead over Carlota Ciganda, made it the best 36 holes of her career.
Lee added, “With only five holes remaining, I knew that we should try to make a move here. “Unfortunately, my putt on 16 was short. I was disappointed. It was a difficult putt [on 18]. I had to putt it pretty far left and let it go.
“But yeah. Like I said, I’m really pleased with my round.”
