The Pure Insurance Championship, part of the PGA Tour Champions, is a unique event in which veteran professionals are paired up with outstanding junior golfers who have participated in the First Tee Monterey Peninsula program.
Amateur Alyssa Steward had a memorable week. She teamed up with Justin Leonard, another Texas, and hit the magic number of golf, a score of 59 during her second round at Spyglass.
Stewart, who was ranked 241st on the Golfweek/Sagarin junior girls golf rankings after 36 holes, won by eight shots.
Leonard told me Saturday afternoon, “She is awesome.” Leonard said, “She has made two eagles and lots of birdies in the last couple days.”
The 17-year old is a junior in high school from Mansfield Texas and has committed to playing college golf at Houston Christian. Leonard sounded like he had a great time being a coach during this tournament.
He said, “I don’t read every putt or everything. I just help her with some yardage or decisions here and there.” “It’s fun. It’s fun.
Brayden Casolari and Brian Gay finished at 21 under par and won the boys’ division by one shot over Garrett Harrison. Sebastian Velazquez, and Andre Follmer.
At the beginning of the week, 80 First Tee members representing 45 U.S. Chapters participated in the competition. The top 24, 12 boys and twelve girls, advanced to Sunday.
