American Express wins Jon Rahm to continue his stellar form and to begin 2023

Five players were just one shot behind the lead on Sunday’s back nine stretch of the 2023 American Express. This set up for an exciting finish in the desert.

After being tied with Davis Thompson throughout the afternoon, Jon Rahm gained the lead late in the round with a birdie at the par-5 16 . He then held on to the win at 27 under at PGA West’s Pete Dye Stadium Course. Rahm shot a 4-under 68 to win his ninth PGA Tour victory and fourth win in six starts.

Rahm finished T-4, T-8, and first at the Sentry Tournament of Champions in Hawaii, which opened this season’s season. Rahm is the 2018 American Express champion and has now finished seven consecutive top-8.

Thompson finished second at 26 under, a rookie on the PGA Tour via the Korn Ferry Tour. The Georgia grad made five cuts this season and placed inside the top 25 twice at Shriners Children’s Open and Fortinet Championship. Xander Schauffele shot a final round 10-under 62 to place third at 25 under alongside Chris Kirk.
