An OWGR-compliant golf tour that includes 54-hole events will begin to earn points in January. However, it is not LIV Golf.

Official World Golf Ranking announced that LIV Golf will not be receiving points until 2023.

After a 16-month application process, the OWGR will include the Gira de Golf Professional de Mexicana. In 2017, the tour was established.

Chairman Peter Dawson released the following statement: “This is a significant landmark for golf and OWGR feels deeply encouraged by this achievement and the continued efforts to advance the sport of golf here in Mexico.” We look forward to following the progress of Gira de Golf Professional de Mexicana, as it continues to play an important role in the development and growth of players from this region.

The Gira de Golf Professional de Mexicana schedule has 54 holes and a 36-hole cut. Open qualifying schools are available for the tour. The season-ending championship is non-cut. The tour was praised by the OWGR for providing routes for players during the COVID-19 pandemic. Gira de Golf hosted tournaments along with the PGA Tour Latinoamerica.

LIV Golf, the new circuit founded by Greg Norman and supported financially by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, may be wondering what this means. LIV applied for OWGR in July 2022, but no decision has been made. With its strategic alliance with the development MENA Tour it attempted to undermine the long process. The OWGR announcement stated that LIV events, which are a team-and-individual competition over 54 holes with no cut or daily shotgun starts, would not be eligible for points in 2022. Although the 16-month-long process points to a November 2023 decision regarding LIV, Wednesday’s OWGR announcement focuses on Gira de Golf’s 36-hole cuts as well as open qualifying schools.

The release: “The Gira de Golf Professional de Mexicana complies with long-standing OWGR Criteria and Format Criteria, providing professional tours at the developmental level with available Ranking points commensurate to the format and expected fields.”

Jose Miguel Bejos, Gira de Golf commissioner, said that the Mexican Professional Golf Tour has been accepted into the OWGR after nearly five years of hard work. “It’s one of the greatest achievements in Mexican professional golf in recent years, and we will continue to promote golf in our country.”

The tour will resume action January 27-29, 2023.
