Andy Bean, a 11-time PGA Tour champion who underwent a Double Lung Replacement last week, died due to complications. He was 70.
Bean won on the PGA Tour 11 times and on the PGA Tour Champions three titles. After an illustrious college career in Florida where he was three-time All-American, he turned professional in 1975. He helped the Gators to win the NCAA Men’s Golf title in 1973.
According to a post on Facebook by Alan Pope, Bean’s lungs had been severely damaged after a bout of COVID-19. Last month, he underwent surgery at Advent Health Hospital Orlando.
He was born on March 13, 1953 in Lafayette, Georgia. This is near the Georgia/Tennessee Border, just 35 miles away from Chattanooga. When he was just a teenager, his family moved to Jekyll Island in Georgia. He then settled in Lakeland where he attended Lakeland High School. Bean played high school golf with Fred Ridley who was a star at Winter Haven High.
Bean retired from the game of golf in 2014, after a car crash in 2011. He also suffered wrist injuries that continued to bother him.
His wife Debbie and their three daughters Ashley, Lindsay, and Jordan survive him. Funeral services will be held in the near future.
