Angel Cabrera, a former major champion, could be back in the game in a few years.
According to Agence France Presse, Cabrera was convicted for assault again on Monday. For assaulting Micaela Ecudero, his ex-girlfriend, the 53-year-old was sentenced to another two years and four more months in prison.
He was already serving time for harassing Cecilia Torres Mana (Cabrera’s partner in 2016-2018).
According to local media, Cabrera stated that “many people think prison is bad.”
Charlie Epps was Cabrera’s friend and longtime instructor. However, he said that he and Cabrera’s supporters were encouraged by the possibility of reducing Cabrera’s sentence to one year for good behaviour.
Charlie Epps explains why his former student is in prison
“He said prison has done him good. Epps said that he felt he had to go to prison, and that he did. He was embarrassed the first year and refused company. But, this year, he has accepted visits from some of his friends.
Epps stated that Cabrera, who competed in the Champions Tour at Pure Insurance Open in September 2020 last year, still hopes to play golf once he is freed from prison.
“Hopefully, when he gets his life together, and is free, he will be welcome back by the senior tour. There have been many cases where people got into trouble, but they lived for another day. He said, “So, I’m praying that.”
Cabrera, 53 years old, is experiencing a decline in what are considered to have been some of the most important years for PGA Tour Champions players. He won the 2007 U.S. Open, the 2009 Masters, and 53 professional tournaments around the world.
Epps stated, “He’s strong dude.” He said that it took him seven years to get on Tour. And, at 37, he won his first major. So he has a lot more than most people. I believe he has the internal fortitude to make it a great story. I’m gonna back him as much as I can.”
