Angel Cabrera is no longer in prison.
According to a article from Golf Digest, the former U.S. Open champion and Masters winner will be released this Friday.
Cabrera said to Golf Digest through his manager Manuel Tagle: “I want to be at home with my family and begin a new chapter in my life.”
The 53-year old was serving time at a prison in Argentina, his home country.
Cabrera, who was convicted for the second time of assault, was sentenced in November to two years, four months and an additional prison term for attacking Micaela Ecudero, his former girlfriend.
Cabrera told the local press that prison had been a blessing for him.
Cabrera was already serving time for assaulting and harassing Cecilia Torres Mana who was Cabrera’s partner from 2016 to 2018.
Charlie Epps, a long-time friend, said Cabrera still dreams about playing golf after he’s released from prison. Cabrera last competed in the Champions Tour, at the Pure Insurance Open, in September 2020. Cabrera has won 53 professional tournaments and the U.S. Open in 2007 and the 2009 Masters.
