Bernhard Langer has already stunned the golfing world by his long run of success that is unmatched by the PGA Tour Champions.
He doesn’t see himself slowing down anytime soon.
Langer stated, “I believe that I have a few more victories in me.”
The 65-year old needs only one win to match Hale Irwin’s record of 44 senior circuit victories. Langer has won at least two Champions tournaments in ten consecutive seasons so it is only a matter time before this record changes.
Langer could also circle next month at the Chubb Classic, which would be a great place to make history. Langer has won the Naples, Florida event four times, at three different courses. Last year, Langer broke his own record for oldest tour champion by winning the Black Course at Tiburon Golf Club. After turning 65, he won the TimberTech Championship in Boca Raton in November.
Langer stated that although the possibility of Irwin being reelected as the All-Time Victory List Leader is “very much on our radar screen now”, he doesn’t feel any extra pressure to achieve this goal.
He said, “I try to be the best and play the best golf every single day.” “…Deep, I believe I can still win tournaments, despite the fact that there are a lot more younger guys.”
Langer stated that he was among the top 10 drivers in the Champions Tour when he joined it. Last year, he was 63rd. Langer now tries to compensate for this shortcoming by improving his accuracy, putting and course strategy. These strengths give him an advantage at venues like Tiburon’s Black Course. Langer stated that it is one of the most tight on the Champions Tour.
Langer stated that Tiburon is not the golf course for big-bombers who spray it around.
Langer opened the 2023 Champions Season at the Mitsubishi Electric Championship, Hawaii. After hitting a shot into water, Langer was tied for fourth in the final round. He ended up tied for 10th.
He said, “Top 10 isn’t bad, but I always hope for better.”
Langer will next play at the Trophy Hassan II in Morocco on February 9-11, 2012. This gives him one chance to match Irwin’s record prior to the Chubb Classic.
Langer, a Boca Raton resident for many years, said that playing at the Chubb is like a home-game. He can drive there and has his family and friends to cheer him on.
He said, “There are wonderful courses to play at the right time of year and the field is always tough.” You know you have beaten the best when you win there.
Langer expressed optimism about the future. He said that as long as he is healthy, can play well, and remains competitive, he will continue to be a full-time participant in the Champions tour.
He said, “As long these three things are still there, I’m likely to continue.” “If one or more of these are missing, it’s probably time for you to pack it all up.”
