Billie Jean King has asked Annika Sorenstam if she can help her usher a women’s professional event in Augusta. ‘No pressure!’

Nov, 2023

Annika Sorenstam described the day she was invited to Augusta National as “one of the most happy days” in her golfing career. Adam Schupak of Golfweek’s broke the news about her green jacket fitting a week ago. The LPGA’s 10-time major champion is the first LPGA professional to join the augusta national golf club. It began accepting female members in 2012

What can I say? “I’m very honored,” said Sorenstam. It was a pleasant surprise. I was so happy. I’m a complete rookie and am just learning the ropes. “I’m not sure where this is going to lead me, but I am thrilled to have the chance to play the course and get to know all the members.”

Sorenstam spoke to the media on Wednesday, while Billie Jean King (a pioneer of sports) and Lyn Saint James (another pioneer of sport) participated in a virtual discussion about Parity Week organized by Gainbridge.

Gainbridge is sponsoring three women’s sports events next week. These include The Annika, driven by Gainbridge, at Pelican; the Billie Jean King Cup, sponsored by Gainbridge in Seville (Spain); and the Women in Motorsports North America summit “Women with Drive III, Driven by Mobil 1”.

King congratulated Sorenstam and told her about her golfing dream.

King said to Sorenstam, and the reporters who were on the phone: “My prayer is that Augusta will have a LPGA women’s event.” “I’m aware that they have amateur girls but I would like to see a professional tournament.” So I really hope it happens.

“I believe you (Annika), will make a huge difference.” You are so strong and the people respect and listen to you.

Everyone laughed when the King said “No pressure!”

King and other participants noted that women’s sport has reached a tipping-point.

Gainbridge, Gainbridge’s sister-company, Parity is the name of “Parity week”. Parity is a brand sponsoring platform that aims to close the income and opportunity gaps between men and women in professional sports.

Parity Week, which takes place next week, will see 180 female athletes competing for a total of $12.85 millions. Gainbridge sponsors women’s sport at 40%. Parity CEO Leela Shrinivasan says that the national average is only 9 percent.

King wants it to be 50-50 on all sides.

What is Sorenstam’s opinion of a Masters Tournament that includes women? Is it a sign of equality for the sport, or a fad?

King said, “Don’t push her to the front of the line just yet.” We’ve got to wait a few years for her, man. She has to first get to know all the members. You need to understand how the system works.

It’s hard work. You keep learning, it’s fun.
