GREENSBORO (N.C.) — Two months after Billy Horschel shot an 84 in the Memorial, and said with tears at his post-round media conference that his “confidence is the lowest it has ever been in my career”, Horschel took a share of 54-hole leader at the Wyndham championship.

Horschel shot a 7-under-par 63 to tie Lucas Glover on 18-under-192. This was a day after he shot 62, the lowest round of his professional career. CBS, with time left to spare at the end broadcast window, aired the clip from Horschel’s emotional press conference. He said, “I’m almost there.”

“That moment, the interview, was like a release, as I have talked about for a long time. “I don’t understand why it happened right there and then, as I shared some of it with my team and family prior to that. But it just happened,” said he. “Since that moment, I’ve had a more positive outlook on life. The game has been moving in the right direction ever since.”

The putts are dropping like they used to. Horschel switched from a Odyssey putter to a new Odyssey putter last week and it has been incredibly effective this week. He is ranked first in Strokes Gained – Putting. He gained more than nine strokes in the greens. This was his seventh consecutive under-par round.

He said, “I just felt like I needed a fresh look.” “We tried a Ping earlier this week, and thought that we would use it. But I was having trouble judging speed on longer putts with it. So we went back to the Odyssey, and it is working well.”

It is. Horschel has been a FedEx Cup winner in 2014 and qualified for playoffs each of the past 10 seasons. However, he was ranked 116th when he started the week. The point standings have him at 116. He is projected to move up 63 places and go to Memphis the following week. However, he cannot finish lower than second place. With the way he is rolling the rock, he could easily win his eighth career title.

He said: “I am happy with where I am at in my game, where I see things going, and where I mentally feel I’m headed.” “Hopefully it is just another day, another step forward. “I haven’t come here for a while but I am prepared for anything, however I feel, whatever tomorrow brings.”
