The feud began with a video that Faxon made “a few years ago”, in which he said that a “tap-in” putt did not necessarily mean that the first putt was “good speed”. He took issue with broadcasters who consistently implied that notion.

Faxon stated that if he made a putt and it didn’t fall in, the ball would be “far enough past the hole where I was forced to mark it”. Fawcett, when shown the video, said he disagreed Faxon’s definition of “good speed”.

Faxon is known for saying that golfers should not focus on their stats and that they shouldn’t record statistics if they wish to improve.

  • BlueDragonKorea : “It’s hard to argue with Fawcett because if you ensure that every putt will be long of the hoop, you are skewing the distribution of putts far past the hole. You won’t become faster just by ensuring the putt is beyond the hole. For example, you might turn a 3 footer to a 6 footer. You may be able to make more putts if you are “lucky”, but you will fall behind on your statistics.
  • Ironman_32 : “I would say that feel is individual and data is average. It’s the same as comparing Bubba Watson and Adam Scott’s swing. Adam’s swing would be more “classical”, and perhaps a better example for someone just starting out to copy, but Bubba is twice as green.
  • Ppperturbo : “I agree that a good putt should be past the hole maybe by a foot. Short of the hole is short and not enough to reach. Therefore, it’s not a good shot. No matter what you call it, it will not make a short putt reach the cup.
