Brian Harman (‘The Butcher Of Hoylake’) holds a 5-stroke lead in the 2023 British Open, amongst third-round winners

Jul, 2023

HOYLAKE (England) — Brian Harman told a British tabloid that he didn’t choose his nickname but he was happy with the label “The Butcher Of Hoylake” given by a British newspaper.

Harman said, “I prefer that to the Harmanator.” Harman enjoys hunting animals during his free time. “That made my chuckle. Yesterday, someone texted me this. That’s funny.”

Harman, 36 years old, continued to hammer the field on Saturday and shot a 2-under-par 69 at Royal Liverpool. This gave him a five stroke lead over Cameron Young going into the final round for the 151 British Open.

Harman recovered from a shaky beginning, with bogeys on the first and fourth holes. In a flash, Harman’s overnight lead of five strokes was reduced to just two strokes, as Jon Rahm shot a bogey free 63. Harman recovered with birdies on the fifth and the ninth holes to get back to double figures under par. He shot even-par 35 for the first nine.

He said, “It was easy to let things spiral out of control. But I doubled down and knew that I was hitting the ball well, even if I hadn’t yet hit any good shots.” “Really proud of how I stuck it out.”

He continued to hunt for birdies. He rolled his birdie putt in at the par-4 12, , th. Harman had complained about his TaylorMade Daddy Longlegs putting stick not too long ago. He considered benching it but has found it to be more of a friend. He made a 20-foot putt for a birdie at the par-3 13 th, and then finished with five consecutive pars to post a 2-under score and a 54 hole total of 12-under.

Harman has had a successful junior and amateur golf career. He has also won two PGA Tour titles. But when asked what his greatest achievement was, he said that he qualified for the FedEx Cup Playoffs 12 years in a row, an accomplishment only eight players have achieved. Harman is among five players who are on track to qualify again. This is a testament to his consistency but also the fact that he’s never won any major events. He did sleep on a 54 hole lead in a major at the 2017 U.S. Open, but it wasn’t a five stroke lead. This is new territory.

Open Championship in 2023: Leaderboard and tee time information

You’d be foolish to not imagine, and I have thought about winning majors my entire life. “It’s why I work so hard, why I practice so much and why i sacrifice so much,” he said. Tomorrow, if I want to see that come true, I have to focus on golf. It’s all about execution and staying in the present moment.

Does the butcher’s knife get dull before the championship is over?

Young, the closest pursuer, said: “I don’t think he will back down.” With the lead he currently has, it won’t be my decision to make tomorrow. I’m going to concentrate on me and see how that goes.

Harman is only the 12 thplayer in the past 40 years who has held a 54 hole lead of at least five strokes in a major tournament. The leader had won nine out of the 11 previous attempts. NBC’s Curt byrum said Harman demonstrated Saturday he had the mental toughness necessary to overcome any adversity he might face in the final rounds.

“Today was as difficult as tomorrow could be.” He said that despite the pressure and expectations, he would be hard to catch.

The third round of the British Open is here. Here are four things you need to know.
