ROCHESTER (N.Y.) – Scottie Scheffler plays the long game at the 105 th PGA Championship. The 26-year old Texan shot a 2-under 68 on Friday at Oak Hill to share the 36 hole lead with Canada’s Corey Conners, and Norway’s Viktor Hovland.
These are the positions that I would like to be in. I want to be in the front. I don’t like being 30th or having to go home. Scheffler stated that she shows up at tournaments in order to give her best performance.
Scheffler, who played in afternoon rain, made four birdies that day. He also had back-to-back birds twice during the round. He showed a sharp iron game early on, as he hit a dart within two feet of the hole at the first for a birdie. At the second he sent it inside nine feet to take the lead. He missed his first shot at No. Then, he skated with six consecutive pars.
“I thought I did an excellent job today of grinding.” He said, “I had some nice ups and downs but kept the course before me for the majority of the time.”
Scheffler made birdies at Nos. The lead was held by Scheffler until he bogeyed at Nos.
Scheffler stated that “to shoot 2-under today, especially on a wet day when it was difficult to play from the rough, was good solid golf.” When you can stay in the lead, and wait for things to heat up, that’s an excellent position. I have done well the first two rounds of scrambling and keeping the course in front of my face. Tomorrow I hope to hit more fairways, making it easier for myself. But ultimately, 2-under around this place is a great round.
