Callaway’s JAWS Raw wedges were released in the weeks following last summer’s U.S. Open. Many of the brand’s top players, including Jon Rahm, Xander Schauffele and Xander Schreiffele, carry them in their bag. The material is anti-glare and will rust after being exposed to moisture and oxygen over time. Pros love raw wedges as the custom grinds hide the process. A club builder can grind material from the heel, toe, or other area of a chromed wedge. This will result in scratches and a worn spot.
Initially, the JAWS raw wedges were only available in four sole configurations. Callaway has expanded the JAWS Raw line or, in the technical parlance, added “line extensions” to the JAWS Full Toe by combining it and offering it in two different sole grinds.
The new JAWS Raw wedges will be available in stores on April 7. They also have JAWS grooves. These are Callaway’s most sharp grooves that help golfers create more greenside spin. The clubs are made from stainless steel with heavier tungsten weights through the holes in the back of each head. Callaway can adjust the hole depth and mass to alter the center gravity. This will allow him to pull the ball in the same direction as the center of his hitting area. The new JAWS Raw wedges’ faces will rust because they are not chromed. Callaway added a peel-off sticker to protect the face from rust before purchasing.
Although the Full Toe design has a high-toe wedge shape, the peak at the toe is less severe than in the Callaway PM Grind. The Full Toe design is designed to provide a greater hitting area, especially when the face is open. However, for those who have never used a high-toe wedge the look at the address position may not be as noticeable.
The center of gravity in the JAWS Full Toe is higher, so golfers can expect a slightly lower and more-piercing ball flight.
The JAWS Raw Full Toe, like the original wedges has grooves that cover all of the hitting area. However, they can only be ordered in sand wedge lofts (54-60°) and lob wedge lofts.
The JAWS Raw full-toe wedges first came in four sole grinds. Now, the new JAWS raw full toe wedges are available in two sole options.
The J Grind has moderate camber from heel to tip, with significant material removed in the heel. As the sole moves towards the toe, it becomes wider. The shape has 10 degrees of bounce and is versatile, making it ideal for greenside bunkers.
C Grind has 8 degrees of bounce and is for experienced players who love to touch shots from tight lies or thick rough. The C Grind’s crescent shape provides significant heel and toe relief. It is also designed to keep its leading edge low so that it can perform well in hard or compact conditions. It is available only in 54, 56 and 58 degrees, as well as 60 degrees, like the J Grind.
Callaway also stated that previously released JAWS Raw X Grin wedges (12 degrees bounce) will no longer be available in sand lofts of 54 or 56 degrees. They were previously only available in 58 and 60 degrees.
The Z Grind (8 levels of bounce) will now be offered in a 62 degree option, along with the previously announced 58- and sixty-degree options.
Callaway has made the Black Plasma finish JAWS Raw Wedges in left-hand available in 60-degree Z and X Grinds.
