Cameron Smith has a difficult start to the Australian Open after an amazing week at the Fortinet Australian Golf Championship. The Champion Golfer Of the Year failed to hit fairways throughout the day and ended his round at +1, eight shots behind David Micheluzzi (-7).
Smith received a standing ovation from the crowd and called his play “pretty silly” as he moved from his post-round press conference towards the practice range. Smith, 29, also stated that it was “as bad” as he’d ever played in a long while.
“I don’t believe it was a mixed bag. I think it all rubbish to be truthful.”
“Maybe some delayed tiredness. It was a bit foggy at times. But that’s not an excuse. It’s my job to get the job done.
The world number three feels that he can still compete despite the disappointing round.
“It’s not that I don’t know how golf is played, it was just a bad day.”
“I just have a few things to do, I think. As I stated last week at the Australian PGA Championship, I felt like the golf was getting better each day.
The Aussie is a master at finding his way out from trouble and taking recovery shots. He must learn to put the ball in the fairway if he is to win the Australian PGA or Australian Open in the same year since 2011.
