HONOLULU — Cam Davis did not see himself shooting an 8-under-62 on Thursday at Waialae Country Club. He didn’t care about signing for a one-shot lead to gain a two stroke advantage when the play was stopped due to darkness in the first round of the Sony Open Hawaii.
He said: “I was on the first tee, staring at a wind of 30 miles per hour on a par-4 500 yard course, and I thought, well pars are good for today.”
The 28-year old Australian birdied five out of six holes on a windswept afternoon to build off his final round 8-under-65 at Kapalua Resort’s Plantation Course.
He said, “I thought that as long as I could build on that round and continue it to this week and the next week, I would be happy.” It was great to follow it up with another really good round.
Davis had nine birdies – his only bogey was at the fifth hole, the most difficult of the day. His putter stayed hot even though the temperature dropped below 70 degrees (and felt as if it were 50 degrees) in this tropical paradise.
I was reading the greens well today for some reason. “Sometimes they don’t come very clearly, but today, I felt like I saw them well, and I put decent speed, and then just hit good putts to top it off,” said Davis. Davis nailed a 37 footer on No. The 13-footer was followed by a 21 footer at No. 15. He was most proud of the 5-foot putt par he made at 17.
He said, “I made a lot really good putts.” “That one at 17 to keep the score going forward was really nice.”
He had the family of his wife, who was visiting from Seattle, following him all around and he gave his group plenty to cheer about.
He said that they cheered on a few pars. “A lot of the kids had never seen a golf event before, and it was fun to show them a great round.”
