CBS Sports released numbers on Tuesday that show the current format is the most popular. The debate continues over the best format for the Tour Championship at the end of the season.
According to the network’s statistics, the final round at East Lake Golf Club Atlanta on Sunday was the most watched in the last five editions of the event.
CBS’ coverage of the 2023 FedEx Cup final round, when Viktor Hovland shot a final-round 63, to beat Xander Schauffele, averaged 4.613 millions viewers. This is the highest number for a final round since Tiger Woods ended a five-year streak by winning the 2018 FedEx Cup.
The weather affected the viewership in the early rounds of the Sunday’s tournament, but the coverage reached a peak at more than 5.5 million later that day.
Hovland won the top prize for the season, $18M. Schauffele, on the other hand, took second place at East Lake and the second-place prize of $6M.
CBS reported that the 42 PGA Tour events broadcasted by the network were up 1 percent, to 2,206 million viewers, for the entire season. However, the nine (now designated) signature events were up five percent.
