Celine Boutier and Rose Zhang are within striking distance of each other at the LPGA’s Maybank Championship

Oct, 2023

Celine Boutier, a French woman, won her first major title this summer when she won the Amundi Evian Championship. She won the Scottish Open the following week.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that her name is near the top of leaderboards in Malaysia for the LPGA’s first Maybank Championship, held at Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club. Boutier shot an 8-under 64 in the second round on Friday to tie for third place, two shots behind Jasmine Suwannapura.

Boutier stated, “I felt like I made a lot birdie puts that were really close.” The greens were soft, so it was easier for me to be aggressive because the ball would stay. “I feel that if you manage to control your ranges very well, it makes it a lot simpler when you don’t need to worry about bounces.”

Boutier, who was delayed by weather on Thursday, found her groove in the second round and scored the lowest score for the day, despite only being two shots behind the leader.

Suwannapura shot a 69 to follow up a 9-under-par opening round. Zhang, who shot a 4-under-68, will play in the final group of Saturday. She is looking forward to her chance at a professional second win this weekend.

Zhang replied, “It’d be amazing.” It’s not something I think about very often. I think there are a lot players who can do incredible things. For me, it’s about being able take the step-by-step approach, having a game plan with Ollie and being able commit to each shot. “If I ever find myself in that situation, I will work my hardest.”
