The Dunas Golf Course in Terras da Comporta, Portugal was officially opened by David McLay Kidd earlier this month.
Kidd began the layout in 2010 but frustration lasted for years until Vanguard Properties, a real estate developer, took over in 2019. Kidd completed the course in a 90 minute drive south of Lisbon, Portugal’s capital. Kidd has built dozens of highly rated golf courses around the U.S.
Kidd stated in a press release announcing Dunas Course’s opening, “It has been an exciting journey with many ups and lows. I could not be more excited.” “I am very proud of the course we have created and I believe there is no golf venue in Europe like this. It’s an easy answer, I would call it a links.
The fact that it’s open to the general public is a great thing. It is nice to be able to create something so unique and natural that is accessible to everyone at an affordable price. I hope that the golf course will quickly fill up with golfers and become a showcase of links golf in Southern Europe.
The layout, which is located near the coast on a naturally sandy terrain, borders the Sado Estuary Nature Reserve. The course will be the first of two at the new development. Sergio Garcia has been named the lead designer on the second course, Torre, which is scheduled to open in the year 2025.
